Star Trek Beyond is the thirteenth movie in the franchise and the third one with the new young cast who look and act remarkably like the original ones would look like at that young age.
Chris Pine who has the bluest of blue eyes and a good looking guy plays Captain Kirk and certain mannerisms and expressions are similar to William Shatner’s Kirk only he’s more serious and doesn’t overact like Shatner did.. Zachary Quinto is the quintessential Spock looking like Leonard Nimoy and Karl Urban is Dr.“Bones” McCoy not only looks like a young McCoy but has his expressions and comments down pat. Wikepedia describes the basic plot this way:
Three years into its five-year voyage, the USS Enterprise arrives at Starbase Yorktown to replenish dwindling supplies while the crew takes shore leave. Struggling to find continued meaning in their mission, Captain James Kirk has applied for a promotion to Vice Admiral of Yorktown. Meanwhile,Hikaru Sulu reunites with his partner and daughter, Spock and Nyota Uhura have amicably ended their relationship, and Montgomery Scott works to keep the ship operational. Spock also receives word that Ambassador Spock has died.
An escape pod drifts out of a nearby nebula. The survivor, Kalara, claims her ship is stranded on a planet in the nebula and the Enterprise is dispatched on a rescue mission. The rescue turns into an ambush when the Enterprise is overwhelmed by a massive swarm of ships and is badly damaged. The swarm’s alien commander, Krall, boards the ship searching for an alien artifact that Kirk had obtained on a recent mission. The swarm rips apart the Enterprise and the saucer section crashes to the planet as the crew abandons ship in escape pods.
On the planet’s surface, Sulu, Uhura and other surviving crew are captured by Krall. Kirk and Chekov, accompanied by Kalara, find the crashed saucer section. Kalara is discovered to be Krall’s ally when she attempts to retrieve the artifact for him. To escape Krall’s crew, Kirk activates the still-functional boosters, causing the saucer to lurch forward and crush Kalara. Meanwhile, a seriously wounded Spock and Leonard McCoy search for the other survivors. Spock tells McCoy that he intends to leave Starfleet to continue Ambassador Spock’s work on New Vulcan. Meanwhile, Scotty is rescued by Jaylah, a scavenger who previously escaped Krall’s encampment. She takes him to her makeshift home, the wreck of the USS Franklin, an early-generation Starfleet vessel that went missing over a hundred years ago. With Scotty’s help, the ship is repaired, and Scotty, Kirk and Chekov, and McCoy and Spock, reunite using the ship as a base. The group plans to raid Krall’s camp to rescue the crew and transport them to the Franklin then escape the planet. Meanwhile, Krall coerces a member of Kirk’s crew to hand over the artifact that she had kept hidden for Kirk. Krall reveals the artifact is the missing half of an ancient bioweapon that can disintegrate a humanoid lifeform in seconds. With the device now complete, Krall intends to attack Yorktown and kill its inhabitants, and, using its advanced technology, go on to attack the Federation. Barely half an hour has passed in “Star Trek Beyond,” and the USS Enterprise is already getting blown to smithereens. First of all, its main thrusters are sheared off, which must spell trouble for the warp drive, and then the tubular body drops away, leaving only the central saucer. In short, everybody’s favorite spacecraft has just turned into one big galactic Frisbee. There’s a wonderful shot of Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), safe in his ejection pod, gazing through the windshield at the flaming corpse of his beloved ship, which plunges down toward the crags of an unwelcoming planet.
The main crew escapes the explosions in pairs and arrive on the new planet and get separated. Spock and Dr. McCoy are together and their friendly adversarial banter is a hoot to hear. When Spock tells McCoy he is thinking of leaving the federation and hasn’t had the time to tell Kirk yet, Bones replies, “Boy he’s going to love hearing that. He can’t live without you. I on the other hand would throw a party” 😀 Another time when Bones attempts to remove a metal shard stuck in Spock he says, “Let’s see your heart is where most people have their livers which explains a lot about you.” 😀
Simon Pegg plays Montgomery Scott (Scotty) the ship’s engineer. He is rescued by a very interesting alien woman named Kaylah who is a tough warrior while being very attractive in a weird alien way with a pure white face with decorative tattoo like black lines going down it and a long flowing blonde pony tail. When she confronts Scotty he says “I’m an engineer. I fix things.” She replies “I know what an engineer is. I’ll help you find your friends if you’ll fix my house,” and takes him to her make-shift home which is an old early generation Starfleet ship.
My least favorite character was Chekov played by Anton Yelchin. I preferred the original Chekov much better as his accent seemed more realistic while this one seemed very forced and unnatural. Sadly Anton Yeltsin died right after finishing the film when his car came between him and a wall on his property. They dedicate the film to him and Leonard Nimoy in the end.
An interesting comment I thought was when the crew is at trying to take off in the old federation ship Scotty says,’ “Captain these old ships were built in space and not to take off in the atmosphere. That’s why they call them starships.”
There is also a hint of a relationship between Lt. Uhura and Spock more on her side than his.
Much controversy was made about the Sulu character being gay. That part is so miniscule that if you blinked you would miss it. They show Sulu saying good-by to his partner and their daughter in a distance and among a crowd scene and that’s it. No words or actions or anything. It lasts about a second. Big deal!!! The hoopla over it was greater than the scene
The action is non-stop and well worth checking out. So far in opening week-end it has grossed 60 million dollars. Check out these great trailers.
