Suicide Squad is a DC comics production based on their super hero series of psychotic criminal misfits who have super powers and have been locked away. It is a follow up to last summer’s hit move Batman vs. Superman which didn’t do well at all and I didn’t see. Figuring they’re all expendable, a U.S. intelligence officer decides to assemble a team of dangerous, incarcerated supervillains for a top-secret mission. Now armed with government weapons, Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang, Killer Croc and other despicable inmates must learn to work together. Dubbed Task Force X, the criminals unite to battle a mysterious and powerful entity, while the diabolical Joker (Jared Leto) launches an evil agenda of his own. Intelligence operative Amanda Waller assembles a team of dangerous criminals—the deranged Harley Quinn; elite hit man Deadshot; pyrokinetic ex-gangster El Diablo; opportunistic thief Captain Boomerang; monstrous cannibal Killer Croc; and specialized mercenary Slipknot—at Belle Reve Penitentiary and places them under command of Colonel Rick Flag, to be used as disposable assets in high-risk missions for the United States government. Each member has a small bomb implanted in their neck, designed to detonate should any member rebel or try to escape.
One of Waller’s intended recruits is Flag’s girlfriend, Dr. June Moone, an archaeologist who is possessed by a witch-goddess known as “Enchantress” after touching a cursed idol. Enchantress quickly turns on everyone, deciding to eradicate mankind for imprisoning her. She besieges Midway City with a horde of monsters and summons her brother, Incubus, to assist her. Waller then deploys the squad to extract a high-profile mark from Midway, however the squad is briefed and put under the impression that what is going on in the city is a terrorist attack. And so the action begins.
It’s often been said there are only five main plots in any movie or book and this is nothing we haven’t seen before and I found it a combination of “Expendables 3” and “Escape From New York” even going as far as having small explosive devices put in them just like Snake Pliskin in “Escape From New York” in case he tried to escape. It has been universally panned by most critics, but if you’re into just light entertainment where you don’t have to think and enjoy lots of special effects and want a good summer movie with lots of popular tunes for a sound track to see then this is not as bad as critics said in my book anyway.
Everyone seems to like the Harley Quinn character who is a former psychiatrist and supposed to be totally insane with a totally dysfunctional relationship with the Joker played Jared Leto but comes across as an air headed blonde bimbo to me though she does have some potential.
I did like Will Smith as Floyd Lawton/Deadshot a mercenary by day and a concerned father by night, Deadshot is a conflicted criminal who enjoys the hunt, but is still trying to do right by his young daughter..
My one complaint about the movie is that it all takes place in dark interior and exterior shots.
