Dr.Strange:A Movie Review!!

06 Nov

doctor_strange_posterDr. Strange, Marvel’s latest transition from comic book hero to big screen, is indeed a strange movie.

Dr. Strange (Bernard Cumberbatch) is a young renowned neurosurgeon who is on his way with a date with another female doctor when he is hit by a car and thrown off a cliff in his car. He survives, but his hands are useless to perform surgery again.

It is during therapy that another doctor tells him of a patient who broke his back and spine and was paralyzed yet made a remarkable recovery and is fully functional now.

Dr. Strange visits the guy who tells him of a special place in Nepal, India that could help him, “but it comes at a high cost” and he was not referring to money.

Meanwhile In KathmanduNepal, the sorcerer Kaecilius and his zealots enter the secret compound Kamar-Taj and murder its librarian, keeper of ancient and mystical texts. They steal a ritual from a book belonging to the Ancient One, a sorcerer who has lived for an unknown time and taught all at Kamar-Taj, including Kaecilius, in the ways of the mystic arts. The Ancient One pursues the traitors, but Kaecilius escapes with the pages and some of his followers.

Strange goes to Nepal and seeks out the place where a bald female sorceress known as The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and her male assistant instruct him in the art of astral projection (leaving one’s body) and creating portals to other dimensions to cross over in and fight evil.

Strange advances quickly over several months, even secretly reading from the text Kaecilius stole from and learning to bend time with the mystical Eye of Agamotto. Mordo and Wong warn Strange against breaking the laws of nature, comparing his arrogant yearning for power to that of Kaecilius, who believes, after the deaths of his loved ones, that everyone should have eternal life.

I found the CGI special effects dazzling and dizzying at the same time and a bit much. I felt it was like a combination CGI/LSD trip with an interesting storyline thrown in which was a bit confusing at times to follow. As with all Marvel characters brought to screen, this is the first of several planned.
